The Semiotics of Passions in the Poetry of Ibn al-Hannat al-Andalusi (d. 438 AH)

Abstract

This study aims to approach poetry through the lens of the semiotics of passions, a critical approach concerned with analyzing the emotional and affective states underlying poetic discourse and revealing the semantic mechanisms that produce emotional meaning within the text. The study begins by tracing the signs and emotional representations that shaped the poet's experience, particularly those related to love, longing, alienation, and existential anxiety, as passions that guide the poetic structure and drive the expression.

The study also seeks to demonstrate how the poetic self in Ibn al-Hannat's work transforms into a tense self, oscillating between desire and loss, and between connection and deprivation, through a network of symbols, images, and signs that grant the text its interpretive and aesthetic dimensions. This study draws on the concepts of the semiotics of emotions, as exemplified by W, to reveal the emotional structure that underpins the poetic discourse of the Andalusian poet. The study concludes that Ibn al-Hannat's poetry not only expresses emotional experience directly, but also constructs a semantic system in which the sign and emotion intertwine, transforming the poem into a space where the movement of emotions and their psychological and symbolic transformations are embodied. The research comprises three sections, preceded by an introduction, followed by a conclusion summarizing the most significant findings, and then a list of references and sources.
