This research aims to investigate the spatial distribution of medical waste in the city of Ramadi and examine its impact on the environment and public health. The research employs a descriptive-analytical approach, utilizing field data, questionnaires, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to map the spatial distribution of waste sources and storage sites.
The results reveal significant spatial variations in the distribution of medical waste within the city. This waste is concentrated in areas containing hospitals and health centers, particularly in the city center, compared to outlying neighborhoods. The study also highlights shortcomings in waste collection and treatment mechanisms, leading to the prevalence of unsanitary practices such as open burning and improper disposal. This contributes to soil, water, and air pollution and increases the risk of disease transmission.
The research concludes that poor environmental management of medical waste, coupled with a lack of environmental awareness and effective legislation, poses a direct threat to the urban environment and public health. The study also recommended improving medical waste disposal systems, introducing modern environmental standards, strengthening government oversight, and raising health and environmental awareness among healthcare workers and local residents to mitigate the negative impacts of this phenomenon.
