The Connotation of the word “Arrafaha” in Q47:6 According to Exegetical Works: A Comparative Study

This research is a comparative study of the connotation of the word “Arrafaha” in Q47:6 as interpreted in the exegetical works. Its importance is underscored by the fact that it is an application model of the comparative exegesis. It can serve as a foundation for subsequent studies which will remove the assumption of contradiction in the exegetical opinions. It will also provide a concept by which all conflicting opinions can be harmonized or by which one of them can be accepted. It is thus pertinent to ask: what are the available opinions on the connotation of the word “Arrafaha” in Q47:6? What is the chronological order of opinions given on it? What is the basis for each opinion and which one is accepted? The objective therefore is study the exegetical opinions on the connotation of the word alongside their evidences in order to know their chronological order and compare them to expose the nature of their difference and arrive at
the accepted opinion. It adopts the inductive and comparative methods. Among the findings of this research is that every opinion advanced by the exegetes has a linguistic origin to which it is connected. This linguistic origin is reflected in their thoughts, even though they did not declare it. The first exegetical connotation given to the word under review is “introduction and explanation” as obtainable in exegetical works produced in the second century AH. The second connotation is “fragrance” which featured in the exegetical works produced in the third century AH. The third connotation is “elevation” according to the exegetical works produced in the fifth century AH. The fourth connotation is “identification” which appeared in the exegetical works of the sixth century AH. So, the research concludes that all the four connotations above are plausible. Their difference is but a kind of diversification which further lends support to the breadth of connotation in the Qur’anic expression.
