The Slums in Samawah City and their Social Effects
Abstract
The issue of slums in Iraqi cities triggered the attention of many researchers in anthropology, sociology and other disciplines, as it is a new phenomenon in the contemporary Iraqi society. The importance of this has emerged due to the repercussions that slums left on the residents in one hand, and the organization of the city and its behavioral and social problems on the urban community on the other .
The city of Samawah has faced this problem just like the rest of the Iraqi cities. This is due to the combination of many factors as climatic conditions such as drought and low rates of rainfall in the past years which contributed in the movement of the population of rural areas to settle in the cities in addition to the natural increase of the urban population. This helped to spread this problem, which forced the administrative bodies in the governorate to expand the municipal boundaries of urban centers several times in an attempt to accommodate the population growth and overpopulation.
