Abstract

    Reading comprehension is usually considered as the core skill in language learning. It is the most difficult skill to master. Mastering reading comprehension skill in English is a priority for foreign language (FL) learners. The current research aims at investigating the effect of using peer tutoring as a teaching technique on Iraqi EFL college students’ performance in reading comprehension.

    The current study hypothesized that there are no statistically significant differences between the performance of the experimental group (taught reading comprehension by using peer tutoring technique and that of the control group ( taught reading comprehension according to the traditional method. The sample consists of 2nd stage/ English Department / College of Arts during the academic year 2019-2020. The experiment of the study lasted for eight weeks. It started on the 24th of February and ended on the 24th of April, 2020. The sample of the study has been intentionally chosen from the English department. It consists of 70 students. The non-equivalent posttest control group has been chosen as the experimental design. The results indicate that there is a statistically significant difference between the experimental group and the control group where the experimental group proved to be better than the control group. According to the results obtained,   conclusions have been drawn, and some recommendations have been set.
