Abstract

The deconstruction of the Soviet Union and the end of the cold war represented an appropriate opportunity for both Turkey and Iran to practice regional and international foreign policy in countries each one thought they had strong impact in. This had led to the escalation of the competitive spirit between them and the increase in the mutual conflict, especially during what it comes to be called " the

Arabic Spring".

Some of the Muslim republics like Azerbaijan is considered by Turkey as the geographical entrance for the " Turkish world", without which Turkey cannot play the role of the 'Big brother" to the rest of the republics of Turkish race. In spite of the prevalence of the Shiite sect in Azerbaijan  , Turkey  had sided with it in its conflict with  Armenia.  Armenia, on the other hand, had found an alley in Iran. The good lesson, one could get is that both Turkey and Iran have promoted their special  interests as states over their religious and sectarian affiliations.
