Abstract

This study approaches al-madd (lengthening) phenomenon in the Quran as a sign that produces significances through its vocal presence.  Al-madd appears at the top of the (al-alif) ، and it is formed by pronouncing al-madd letters or al-madd vowels (al-alif، al-wāw and al-yā') with al-hamza in one word to be called the joined madd ، or in two words to be called the separated madd . These two madds are divided into a group of madds.

This research study established connections among different kinds of madds and the meanings that are produced from this phenomenon in the Quran in particular. It is noteworthy that the madd phenomenon has been popular not only in the Quran but also in poetry and songs .
