Sufi Terms in the Commentaries on (Al-Burdah Poem) by Al-Busiri (d. 695 AH) - A Lexical-Semantic Study (Selected Models

Abstract

This study, entitled “Sufi Terms in Al-Busiri’s Burda Poem: A Semantic and Lexical Study,” examines the expressions that construct the spiritual atmosphere of the poem and identifies their meanings as found in both Arabic linguistic heritage and Sufi tradition. It also explores how Al-Busiri employs these terms to articulate his vision in praising the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The research adopts a semantic–lexical approach, which involves tracing the Sufi terms, clarifying their original linguistic meanings, comparing them with their technical meanings in Sufi discourse, and analyzing their function within the context of the Burda.

The study investigates a set of key terms that form the foundation of Sufi expression—such as those related to spiritual love, ecstasy, annihilation (fanā’), divine light, and intercession. The findings reveal Al-Busiri’s skillful use of these terms within a poetic structure that combines depth of meaning with stylistic beauty, contributing to the poem’s elevated status and widespread influence in Islamic heritage.

The study concludes that the Sufi terms in the Burda serve as semantic keys that unveil the poem’s spiritual dimension. Their analysis enhances the understanding of Al-Busiri’s expressive intentions and highlights the richness and diversity of Sufi terminology in Arabic literature.
