Abstract

This study examines the concept of marginal details in modern Arabic narrative as a subtle narrative component that contributes significantly to the construction of narrative discourse and the production of meaning. It is based on the assumption that elements appearing secondary or peripheral on the textual surface perform structural and semantic functions that exceed their apparent textual presence, thereby contributing to textual coherence and expanding the horizons of interpretation. The study seeks to establish an operational definition of this concept within the frameworks of contemporary narratology and semiotics while clarifying its position within narrative structure and identifying its mechanisms and functions in organizing narrative discourse. The research adopts a descriptive-analytical approach, drawing upon modern narratology, semiotics, and discourse analysis to investigate both the theoretical foundations and the structural and semantic functions of marginal details in modern Arabic narrative. It explores their relationship with narrative economy and textual cohesion, their role in constructing events, characters, and narrative space, their influence on narrative rhythm, and their symbolic, psychological, and cultural dimensions, as well as their contribution to shaping the reader’s horizon of expectations and generating meaning. The study concludes that marginal details constitute active structural units within narrative discourse and that their significance derives not from the extent of their textual presence but from their function within the network of textual relations. These details contribute to the construction of the deep structure of the narrative, connect its various levels, and enrich interpretive possibilities. The research further demonstrates that approaching modern Arabic narrative through the lens of marginal details reveals previously overlooked layers of meaning, making this concept a promising critical and analytical tool for contemporary narrative studies.
