The Jurisprudential Lexicon: Its Origins, Development, and Role in Enriching the Arabic Language

Abstract

Lexicography has held a position of paramount importance among linguists since the dawn of Islam. Their task was to standardize Arabic vocabulary and examine the various meanings of words based on their derivations, usages, and diverse functions. The ultimate objective was to serve the Holy Quran, the noble Prophetic Hadith, and their associated disciplines, as well as to preserve the Arabic language—the language of Islam and an integral part of the faith itself.

Specialized dictionaries emerged for religious sciences—such as those covering Quranic studies, Hadith studies, theology (*aqidah*), jurisprudence (*fiqh*), and the principles of jurisprudence (*usul al-fiqh*)—as well as for other fields like medicine and pharmacy. These works focused on the terminology specific to each discipline, aiming to serve the field and facilitate a better understanding of it.

The language of Islamic jurisprudence constitutes the linguistic and semantic system employed by jurists to derive legal rulings and formulate them into rules and laws; this language is distinguished by a unique blend of precision, comprehensiveness, and flexibility.

Over the centuries, this language evolved into an integrated Islamic legal system that articulates Sharia and serves as a fundamental source for modern legal terminology in Islamic nations.

This study examines the language of Islamic jurisprudence, the specialized lexicon designed for it—along with the lexicon's characteristics—and its impact on the flourishing of the Arabic language.
