The Capitol and Its Importance in Ancient Rome

Abstract

• The Research deals with the Capitoline Hill and its importance in the political and Religious history of Rome, through tracing its History since the beginning of human settlement in the Late Bronze Age,where it acquired a sacred character even before the founding of the city of Rome. Then the Research focuses on the basic role that it played as an important center for worship, because of its containing the Temple of Jupiter, which was inaugurated in the year 509 BC, which was formed together with the two goddesses Juno and Minerva as what was known as the Capitoline Triad. The research also sheds light on its role in performing religious and political rituals, as the Religious and military processions used to end at it, in addition to it being a headquarters for taking political decisions, declaring wars, and concluding treaties in order to confer legitimacy upon them. The Research also shows how the emperors adopted the symbolism of the Capitoline to establish their political legitimacy through the custom of building temples and documenting victories in official records that were preserved on this hill
