Research Summary

This research examines the discovery of oil in Sudan and its role in the conflict over the Abyei region, the border area between North and South Sudan. It also examines the importance of its geographical location and the discovery of oil there on the situation in Sudan as a whole. This conflict continues to this day.

The research consists of three sections: the first discusses the discovery of oil in Sudan as a whole; the second discusses the discovery of oil in the Abyei region in particular; and the third discusses the role of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (Naivasha) in the distribution of revenues from the Abyei region.
