Discussions of monotheism according to Imam Shihab al-Din al-Siwasi in his interpretation، Uyun al-Tafasir

Abstract

This research explores the theological concept of Tawhid (monotheism) as presented by Imam Shihab al-Din al-Siwasi in his well-known exegesis ‘Uyūn al-Tafāsīr (“The Eyes of Interpretations”). This tafsir (Qur'anic commentary) integrates doctrinal, Sufi, and educational dimensions within a balanced Sunni framework. Imam al-Siwasi placed significant emphasis on clarifying the fundamentals of Islamic creed, particularly the oneness of Allah in His Lordship (Tawhid al-Rububiyyah), Divinity (Tawhid al-Uluhiyyah), and Names and Attributes (Tawhid al-Asma’ wa al-Sifat). His interpretive approach combines textual evidence and rational reasoning, relying on the Qur’an and Prophetic traditions, while also giving special attention to refuting misconceptions and addressing theological deviations.

The research analyzes key interpretive passages where al-Siwasi discusses issues of Tawhid, such as affirming the divine attributes without distortion or anthropomorphism, emphasizing pure worship of Allah, and confirming God’s exclusive role in creation and governance. The study also highlights the impact of Tawhid on spiritual conduct and the Sufi insights that reflect the depth of the spiritual dimension in his understanding of divine unity.

The research concludes that ‘Uyūn al-Tafāsīr stands as a rich source for understanding Islamic theology from an integrated exegetical perspective. It represents an important link in the legacy of scholars who combined Qur’anic interpretation with sound doctrine, in a style that speaks to both laypeople and scholars, and helps instill Tawhid in both heart and mind.
