Abstract

This study aims to analyze the age structure of the population of Kirkuk Governorate for the year 2023 using different demographic indicators such as median age, aging index, and dependency burden index. The research was divided into two parts, the first of which deals with the demographic reality of the governorate, while the second focused on studying age structure indicators.

The results showed that Kirkuk Governorate is witnessing high population growth, with a clear disparity in the numerical and relative distribution between males and females, as the median age for males was 19 years, and for females 21.2 years, indicating that the governorate is close to becoming a mature society. The study also showed that the aging index reached 7.6% for males and 9.2% for females, while the dependency burden rate reached 73.5% at the governorate level.

This study relied on official data from the Central Bureau of Statistics and Information Technology, and the indicators were applied according to gender (males, females) and environment (urban and rural). The study reached several recommendations, including creating a database for age groups, paying attention to the health and education sectors, and reducing the disparities between urban and rural areas, with a focus on the middle age group (15-64 years) as it is the economically active group.
