Abstract

This research aims to present a textual study of one of Al-Mutanabbi’s poems, “Na‘uddu al-Mushrifiyyata wa al-‘Awāli”, which he composed upon the death of Sayf al-Dawla al-Hamdani’s mother. The study analyzes the poem’s linguistic structure and artistic style based on the principles of text linguistics. Al-Mutanabbi is considered one of the greatest Arabic poets and a leading figure of his era. His poems are renowned for their profound meanings, strong composition, and cohesive structure, making them an ideal model for textual analysis.

This research focuses on text cohesion and coherence by examining the linguistic tools Al-Mutanabbi employs to create unity and consistency within the poem. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical method, which includes defining text linguistics, its approaches, functions, and objectives, as well as outlining the seven textual standards: cohesion, coherence, intertextuality, intentionality, situationality, acceptability, and informativeness. The poem is then analyzed based on these criteria.

The findings of this research indicate that text linguistics plays a significant role in uncovering and describing the internal and external relationships within textual structures. Moreover, Al-Mutanabbi’s poem demonstrates a high degree of textual cohesion, as all seven textual criteria are present to varying extents. This study highlights the importance of textual analysis in examining classical Arabic poetry and paves the way for further research using modern linguistic approaches to explore poetic texts.
