Abstract

The research is nothing but an attempt to shed light on an important segment of society in the Mahmoudiyah district, which is represented by a group of employees who appear to be elderly and others who have provided great services in their work sites. The importance of the research is evident from the emergence of important research on the population of the elderly in terms of their spatial distribution and qualitative composition. and age, as well as their environmental distribution (urban, rural), which are important indicators that deserve preferred preferences, due to their connection to the economic, cultural, political, social and natural characteristics of the study area.

The importance of this research is highlighted in analyzing and diagnosing the reality of the situation of the elderly population and their spatial disparity in the Mahmoudiya District for the years (1997-2022) in terms of their numerical, relative and environmental distribution and their qualitative and age composition, as attention to this segment is something imposed by the circumstances of society and its quest for development, and many countries have put Programs that guarantee a decent life for this segment. In Iraq, the elderly suffer from clear neglect that has led to the emergence of many problems among this segment of the population, and these problems will certainly worsen day after day.

The study showed that the size of the elderly population in the Mahmoudiya district began to grow increasingly. After their size reached (9787) in 1997, it increased to (12742) in 2022. The study revealed that there is a discrepancy in the size of the elderly population and their spatial distribution among the administrative units of the study area.
